Anal fissures are a problem that many face. Before one begins to treat anal fissures, they need to clearly understand them, so that they can take all necessary steps to ensure it does not reoccur. An anal fissure is a tear in the lower rectum or the anus lining which causes extreme pain during bowel movements. For acute anal fissures one can do home treatments, but if the problem becomes very chronic, it is always advisable to consult a doctor and be on medications.

Home treatments or are a good way to treat anal fissures and they usually take 4 to 6 weeks. One can get relief from the pain in a few days. A good home treatment is to sit in hot water for 20 minutes three to four times in a day. One should also increase their fluid intake and have more fiber rich food and also take laxatives for easy bowel movements. One should always consult their doctor before taking laxatives. There are ointments available also which can be applied and these also provide relief.

There are many times when home treatments do not work to treat anal fissures. When the patient feels the pain and notices the fissure is not healed after 6 weeks of home treatment also, they should consult a doctor. There are many precautions needed when one has anal fissures in chronic stage. It is important to consult a doctor as one might also need surgery to treat anal fissures at this stage apart from medications.
